How to Start an Office Cleaning Business

You and your spouse both work full time jobs. But, at the end of the money there is too much month left! Bills are starting to pile up. It is mutually agreed that one of you is going to have to get a part-time job just to make ends meet. Going to work graveyard shift at the corner store for minimum wage seems like the only option. STOP!

Take a deep breath and consider your options of starting an office cleaning business and inventory your available resources. You have been cleaning your place of residence for years and probably have most of the equipment needed to start a cleaning business. The one piece of equipment you will probably need to invest in is a commercial vacuum cleaner. You’ve seen them before, an upright model with the red bag. They are available used, just check your online classified listings and local vacuum repair shops.

Next take a trip to your local home improvement warehouse and go down their cleaning supplies aisle. You’ll find, in bulk, the necessary chemicals and cleaning agents needed to clean an office. If you can’t find it there then check you local janitorial supply store. The prices may be a bit higher but you’ll have a wider selection and an expert to ask any relevant questions.

Now comes the scary part. You need to get your cleaning business legal; license, insurance, etc. just check with your local Chamber of Commerce or County Business License office. They will tell you EXACTLY what you need. The other scary part is contracts and paperwork. This is where a lot of folks fall short. Simply check on the internet to find a generic contract for your cleaning account. Make sure everything is in writing! Also, sit down and determine the prices you will charge. There are pricing cheat sheets online but they usually cost money and are not localized to your area.

Get your business cards printed up. Not too many, just a few hundred or so to start and hand them out to every business owner you find. One technique I use is a business card exchange. I take one of theirs and give them one of mine, with a smile of course! In addition, use your funeral list; you know that list of everyone that would attend your funeral. Well call them up, while you’re still alive, and tell them your have just started an office cleaning business and are looking for accounts to clean. You’ll be surprised at how helpful your list will be referring you.

Office cleaning is not glamorous but it is simple, profitable and in demand. You only need a few pieces of equipment and the will power to go out and hand out your business card. Soon you’ll be making a great income from part-time work. Eventually you may want to expand and do some advanced marketing and promotion and grow a sizable business with sub-contractors and affiliate vendors. You can even sell off some accounts to a fellow cleaner. The growth is up to you. I hope this helps you.

To your wealth and happiness!

Matt
